Home Harvest

Image
Yesterday and today have been busy. I got the potatoes and carrots out of the ground and had some help picking them up at the end of the day. Today I cleaned off the sugar pumpkins, about 144 in all.   Tomorrow, I will take off as many gourds and pumpkins as I can.  Snow in the short-term forecast has my panties in a knot!  Fred was fairly certain there would be no combining today, but Todd is out there straight-cutting oats. Hopefully, he can work quite late, but the temperature dropped very fast once the sun went down. I went for a short round with him when I took him his dinner. Jared has had his third piano lesson already, and has picked some lovely pieces this year.

Stormy Times

Todd is in the field while I'm in the kitchen and hear a big BOOM from the basement. I go flying down the stairs to see what the hell happened and then quickly find a phone to call Todd and tell him that our pressure tank had exploded. That was at 5pm and we had a new tank installed by 9am the next morning, so we really didn't suffer all that much, if at all.  Being busy, Todd didn't do the best job of installing it off the start, but then the storm hit and oy! Rain, wind, and hail had us out and about over the next couple of days surveying the damage.  We were fairly lucky compared to some, and worse off compared to others. Near Ituna has nothing left to combine. Our oats are going to be a pain in the ass to get off, as they have been flattened. The canola shelled out some, though how much is difficult to say. This was taken the evening of the storm. Everyone was out working on getting the swathed wheat off. Jared and I went for a quick visit after his piano le...

A Friendly Farm

Image
Last Friday I got to visit Margaret's farm. I sort of invited myself out there, but was very warmly greeted by not only Margaret, but also her dog, cats and of course, llamas! Baby is 5 months old and hanging out with Big Brother. This is Baby's big brother. A group of females visiting with Jinks. Jinks having a snuggle with a beautiful horse, whose name I have forgotten.

Work Work Work

Yesterday we got the school supplies taken care of, so in case pulling out the combines wasn't enough, soon we'll be seeing the school buses in the yard again.  Oy, but summer went by fast.  If only winter could do the same thing. I spent some time on the combine with my Honey and saw how the straight-cutter worked.  It was fascinating for all of 2 minutes... sorry Honey.   Yes, that is a Cadillac out in the field. Grandpa was hauling grain. Kaitlynn is working a lot these last couple weeks of summer and is trying to make friends with Diesel the cat, so that she might rescue the poor skinny thing.  Now we suspect that she has kittens and that has complicated things a bit.   KK has also been working on her digital art a lot lately.

Harvest Beginnings

Image
Harvest has now officially started because I had dinner in the field with Todd. It turned into a 2 and a half hour affair when I had to drive him out to help Glen who is harvesting the peas and trying to operate the new straight-cut header.  It's not going very well for him.  Hopefully he catches on before he causes any major, expensive damage.  Slowly adding jars of pickles to the cold room. Going out to clean off the peas. The garden in the evening, just after sunset.

While waiting in the SHHS parking lot, I noticed this cute gas tank sticker.  Perfect! Especially for a car that probably belongs to a student. At Garnet Hansen's auction sale, Glen bought a newish combine and a set of harrows. They trust that winter will eventually end.

Marshmallow World

All sorts of things have been going on around here.  We didn't feel like were into that much of a hurry to get the yard ready for winter, but we just barely got done when the white stuff started to pile up. And now, we have about a foot of it and we're not even through the first week of November. It looks so gorgeous out there, and somehow, the snow makes it feels warmer out there.  Maybe it is just that cold temperatures are more acceptable when the world is white.   Jared is having some fun here with his little origami boat. This picture does not do those flames justice. They were high and they were hot. Todd just drives along the swath lighting it up with a torch as he goes. KK wanted here hair dyed red and turned out more orange.  We spent an entire morning trying to get it out. We even tried bleach.  For a temporary colour, it sure did take. Guess the weight and win the pumpkin at Save On Foods. Jared said no to this costu...
