Showing posts with the label pumpkins

Home Harvest

Image
Yesterday and today have been busy. I got the potatoes and carrots out of the ground and had some help picking them up at the end of the day. Today I cleaned off the sugar pumpkins, about 144 in all.   Tomorrow, I will take off as many gourds and pumpkins as I can.  Snow in the short-term forecast has my panties in a knot!  Fred was fairly certain there would be no combining today, but Todd is out there straight-cutting oats. Hopefully, he can work quite late, but the temperature dropped very fast once the sun went down. I went for a short round with him when I took him his dinner. Jared has had his third piano lesson already, and has picked some lovely pieces this year.

Autumn Awesomeness

You would think that all the pumpkins and gourds provided by the garden would be enough, but nope. I also love to crochet them and today, for the first time, I made one with the knitting needles. The smallest one here is a little smaller than a golf ball and as cute as a button. The problem is that if the cats find them, they think I made them a toy. But who can resist making wee thingies?  The driftwood I used in this photo is from Tuktoyaktuk and I intend to make a mobile or something with some of it. I collected some rocks from up there too, so it's just to figure out how to build it. It is only seven degrees there (Tuk) at the moment, but it's only 13 here. And it's windy, making what Piglet would call "a blustery day." Kaitlynn has been at work all day, but we're taking her into Yorkton later to stay with Sophie. So we'll probably end up at DQ. Jared was busy picking new songs for his Grade 7 year.  He's bucking a little, but nothing we can...

Fall Fun

Just a few photos from around the house and yard to celebrated my favourite time of year.  Now, if only the weather would cooperate...

Gourds Galore

I took an afternoon and pushed my way around the gourd patch to see what surprises awaited me. I wasn't disappointed in the variety, and had a great time transforming the front door area and adding them to the fall décor inside.

Hello September!

At least I'll get one post done on the day it belongs. It has been a beautiful day. Todd and Glen are working on getting the peas off. It will likely be a late night because of the forecast for rain tomorrow. It's not very often you see 100% chance. The yard and the house kept me very busy today and I am sure there won't be much time for daydreaming once my head hits the pillow. I did try to take a break and do some reading, but Sooty figured he needed attention. Jared and I went on a pumpkin hunt this morning after trimming off a bunch of excess vines. We got a few surprises, including maybe the biggest Jack-of-all-trades I've ever grown. It's going to make a beauty of a jack-o' lantern. Kaitlynn worked all day yesterday and all day today, and she is booked to work the stat all day tomorrow which is great for goal of saving money to move out next year. July Wrap-Up

Image
We picked Ethan up on the 27th and the original plan was that he would be going home today, but that has changed and now he might not have to go home until the 3rd!  The boys are having a fantastic time. They've been playing a lot on the computer and X-Box, but they've been having a ton of fun outdoors too. Jared has showed him how to use the scooter but what they have really been having fun with are the golf clubs. Hitting ball after ball off the top of the hill and then going to see how many they can find has filled in more than a few hours. The gardens are looking amazing.  All the watering has paid off and things are growing nicely. While doing chores this morning, I was shocked to see how many blooms are on the sugar pumpkins, bright pops of yellow/orange among the vines. The flower gardens are a joy to walk through, especially in the evening when the scents are at their strongest. A little piece of heaven all our own.

Marshmallow World

All sorts of things have been going on around here.  We didn't feel like were into that much of a hurry to get the yard ready for winter, but we just barely got done when the white stuff started to pile up. And now, we have about a foot of it and we're not even through the first week of November. It looks so gorgeous out there, and somehow, the snow makes it feels warmer out there.  Maybe it is just that cold temperatures are more acceptable when the world is white.   Jared is having some fun here with his little origami boat. This picture does not do those flames justice. They were high and they were hot. Todd just drives along the swath lighting it up with a torch as he goes. KK wanted here hair dyed red and turned out more orange.  We spent an entire morning trying to get it out. We even tried bleach.  For a temporary colour, it sure did take. Guess the weight and win the pumpkin at Save On Foods. Jared said no to this costu...
